Columbia, Missouri —Seven individuals and one news outlet will be recipients of the 2018
Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism on October 16. The Missouri School
of Journalism has awarded medals annually since 1930. Honorees include Christiane Amanpour
and Sir Winston Churchill. They are selected by the faculty of the School on the basis of lifetime or
superior achievement in journalism.

The Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, founded in 1908, is the oldest
formal journalism school in America. While young journalists and “citizen correspondences” today
could be posting their stories and headlines with little or no oversight at all, The School has
shifted its role simply from being training grounds for print and broadcasting media to become
centers for studying the insight and innovation of media industry in an information society.

The School directly admits students who have met competitive academic standards in their high
schools or based on their aptitude as evidenced by their performance on standardized tests (SAT/
ACT). It also welcomes students as pre-journalism majors who will demonstrate through college
coursework their readiness for advanced academic programs. Both directly admitted and prejournalism students have to take prerequisite courses designed to acquaint them with career
options while beginning to build a foundation in core skills and determining the focus of their
journalism studies.
