Lexington, Virginia — When it comes to the current ranking of public national liberal arts colleges,
Virginia Military Institute, the nation’s oldest state-supported military college, falls behind the U.S.
Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The first class of its
cadets arrived in 1839. On August 18, 2018, five hundred nineteen new cadets officially register
their names to the Institution’s Matriculation Book.

VMI requires all cadets complete four years of ROTC training in one of the three ROTC programs:
Army, Navy/Marine, or Air Force. The VMI system is designed to prepare qualified cadets for a
military commission upon graduation, but there is no requirement that cadets seek a

VMI’s multi-faceted program is designed to instill in each cadet the lifelong values of appreciation,
integrity, devotion to duty, fairness, self-discipline and self-reliance. Its mission is to nourish men
and women educated for civilian life but prepared to serve the country in the Armed Forces. Not
all graduates choose military paths as their career.
