Cambridge, Massachusetts – Lawrence S. Bacow, who faces pressing challenges of social diversity
and economic accessibility, was officially installed as Harvard University’s twenty-ninth president
on October 5.

Being an expert on environment law and negotiation, Dr. Bacow was previously the president of
Tufts University and the chancellor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Four immediate
predecessors attended the inauguration ceremony: Drew Faust, Larry Summers, Neil Rubenstine
and Derek Bok.

Dr. Bacow reiterated the Ivy League institution’s commitment to truth, excellence, and
opportunity. He maintained that “higher education has not only supported our democracy, but in
some sense it has created it – and we are nowhere near done.” Eight Harvard alumni signed the
Declaration of Independence. Eight U.S. presidents graduated from Harvard.
