Los Angeles, California — Since 1988, Americans have been observing National Hispanic Heritage
Month annually from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the cultures, histories and
contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and
Central and South America. The California State University at Los Angeles is now celebrating the
50th anniversary of the Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies department.
Cal State LA’s program was founded in 1968 when ethnic studies courses first started at American
universities and expanded as a discipline. It presented a different approach to teaching history by
focusing on one ethnic group and its relationship to the rest of the United States, instead of the
previously Eurocentric approach to American history.
